Resetting Anger in Children

Anger, like other emotions, is a natural emotion that people have. It protects people against dangerous life events and ensures safety. However, unlike other emotions, how to express anger, that is, how to control anger, is important. From this point of view, the main goal is not to reduce the child's anger to zero, but to teach him how to control his anger.

How should parents react when the child gets angry?

  • When children's anger reaches its extreme, punishing the child, giving the same reaction as the child, or even talking to him is not a solution. These methods increase his tension and lead to harsher behavior.
  • In case of increased anger, calmness should be maintained and the child should be waited to calm down, then talk to him/her.
  • In situations where anger increases, energy accumulates in the human body and this energy must be discharged. For this reason, an environment should be provided at home where the child can release his energy. A play area should be created with play dough, paper on which to draw, crayons, and a teddy bear or pillow to hug, and the child should be able to relieve his or her energy with these materials.
  • This energy disposal area should be introduced to the child beforehand, and a calming drama should be performed in this area with the parents.
